Climate Parliament drives Tech Data toward climate neutrality

Volunteers bring their own sustainable ideas and implement them

TERNAT, Belgium, January 19, 2022 – Tech Data, a TD SYNNEX (NYSE: SNX) company, launches Climate Parliament. About thirty volunteers have been working at Tech Data in the Benelux region for more than a year to devise and implement environmental-saving measures. The goal is to make Tech Data climate neutral. The entire initiative is coordinated bottom-up and has been given the name Climate Parliament. The volunteers use design thinking to come up with original and feasible initiatives. Resellers and vendors will also be involved in the initiative.

The Climate Parliament came about at the end of 2020 after a call by VP Benelux Patrick Steenssens. “Contacts with other companies had made it clear to me that we should not wait for government regulations to impose climate measures,” says Patrick Steenssens. “By having employees voluntarily participate in this initiative, we know that the theme is carried throughout the organization. Environmental awareness must be ingrained in our DNA.”

An initial group of 25 volunteers from Belgium and the Netherlands, and from different departments across Tech Data received a five-day training on design thinking. Four major initiatives came out of these workshops, around internal awareness (all Tech Data employees receive energy-saving tips and tools), green transport, green mobility, and waste reduction. These initiatives are already being implemented and the first results are becoming visible. In particular, great progress has already been made in waste management, and electric cars are becoming the norm in the fleet. Members of the Climate Parliament also put their weight behind the ISO 14001 certification and ensured that the turnaround time was faster than usual.

A new group of volunteers will soon start the training. The projects they come up with will run parallel to the first four projects.

“When people are involved in the decision-making process, it is much easier to get everyone on board,” says Diana Pluut, Senior Manager – Change Management & Communications, Benelux, who is coordinating the project. “By following the design thinking methodology, we make very conscious decisions. Some choices are easy, for example, separating waste better. Others are complex and then it’s essential to have a broad base of support.”

Climate neutrality is not limited to Tech Data’s internal operations. The company is also going to work with its partners: resellers, vendors, transport companies, and electricity suppliers. Volunteers from the Climate Parliament have already consulted with resellers about the possibilities of making grouped deliveries to save fuel. Steenssens: “We want to be a catalyst that ensures that other companies also start thinking about their operation more consciously. We have also noticed that the enthusiasm of our volunteers is prevalent in their private lives. We want to expand that enthusiasm. As an individual, you can already do a lot, but as a company, you can do so much more. That is why I want to call on all companies to get started as well, and not to wait for legal obligations.”

Within Tech Data, The Climate Parliament initiative has already inspired other countries in Europe, who are now also getting involved, too.
